Hobbes, Leviathan, 1651.
Part I. Of Man. Chap. I. Of SENSE. (continued.)
The SENSE as the Originall of the Thoughts of man
(Hobbes 1651: 3)
Why does Hobbes start Leviathan with ‘Sense’? It is because ‘Sense’ is the ‘Originall’ of the Thoughts of man. Hobbes' discourse leads from cause to effect. Consideration of ‘Sense’ is therefore a prerequisite for deriving ‘Commonwealth’.
