ロック『再考察』からの引用
MR. Lock says, pag. 22. That Money differs from Uncoin'd Silver only in this, That the Quantity of Silver in each piece of Money, is ascertain'd by the Stamp it bears; which is set there, to be a Publick Voucher of its Weight and Fineness.
That it is Quantity of Silver Mankind give or take, or contract for, that they estimate the value of other things, and satisfy for them; and thus by its Quantity, Silver becomes the Measure of Commerce.
ロック氏は22ページで言う.『貨幣が鋳造されていない銀と異なる唯一の点は,貨幣の量目と純度との公的保証としてそこにふされている刻印によって,貨幣の各個片に含まれる銀の量が確認される点にある.』
『人類が他の諸物の価値を評価し,そしてそれら〔他の諸物〕に対して支払うのは,彼らが授受したり契約したりする銀の量であり,かくして銀は,その量によって,商業の尺度となる.』

ここでバーボンが引用している著作は,ジョン・ロック『貨幣の価値の引き上げに関する再考察』(John Locke, Further Considerations Concerning Raising the Value of Money, London, 1695)である.ロックは『再考察』で次のように述べていた.
二,人々が他の諸物の価値を評価し,それら〔他の諸物〕に対して支払うのは,彼らが授受したり契約したりする銀の量によってである.かくして銀は,その量によって,商業の尺度となる.
四,貨幣が鋳造されていない銀と異なる唯一の点は,貨幣の量目と純度との公的保証としてそこにふされている刻印によって,貨幣の各個片に含まれる銀の量が確認される点にある.
